‘Internal Affairs’ is a crime and thriller film directed by Mike Figgis and set in Los Angeles. The story is about the investigation of an officer in the Los Angeles Police Department Internal Affairs (LAPDIA).
The story centres on the case of Dennis Peck (played by Richard Gere), a suave womaniser, quick manipulator and dishonest LA cop who uses his colleague officers as pawns for his own wicked purposes while showing a tender side as a devoted father. His unexplainable actions result in an investigation by the LAPD. The IA assigns LAPD agent Raymond Avila (Andy Garcia), as well as Amy Wallace (Laurie Metcalf), to investigate Peck’s whereabouts. They start by threatening Van Stretch (William Baldwin), Peck’s partner, that if he will not confess to the illegal activities of Peck, he’ll be prosecuted. Being clever, Peck sets up his partner’s death while they’re on a mission and threatens Raymond’s wife in order to stop the investigation. Then, Peck meets Kathleen (Nancy Travis), Raymond’s wife, and makes up a story that her husband is gay and obsessed with Peck. Raymond sees them and, the following day, Kathleen and Raymond meet in a restaurant and argue. Kathleen convinces her husband that she’s not having an affair with Peck. Raymond pursues his investigation. Peck’s wife reveals that her husband is dishonest and associates with the well-known criminal Steven Arrocas (John Kapelos).
Though the end of the story is disappointing, most of the cast did a good job. Richard Gere’s performance here is top-of-the-line.
